How do you refurbish harps?
1. Completely disassemble the harp
2. Soak the reed plates in vinegar overnight
3. Scrub the cover plates with a soft brush and Bar Keeper’s Friend. Rinse thoroughly
4. If plastic or aluminum, wash the comb in an Ultrasonic Cleaner and then ream the air chambers with a small brush. Rinse thoroughly and leave to dry
5. If wood, sand the comb (including the air chambers), blow away sand dust, and then treat the wood with Butcher Block Conditioner
6. Scrub the reed plates with a soft brush and Bar Keeper’s Friend. Rinse thoroughly and leave to dry
7. Reattach the clean reed plates to the clean comb
8. Test the reeds one-by-one and chord-by-chord
9. Re-gap reeds and replace up to one reed as needed. If more than one reed is bad, replace the entire reed plate with a clean, used one
10. Using an electronic tuner, tune the reeds to equal temperament, just intonation, or compromise Marine Band, depending on the harp
11. Repeat #8
12. Reattached the clean cover plates
13. Sanitize the harp in an Ozone Sanitizer
How do you customize Special 20 harps?
In addition to the steps described in the AlbertHarp refurbishment process, the following steps are added:
1. Remove the plastic sprues in each air channel
2. Increase the number of reed plate screws from 6 to 8
3. Flatten the rear flange of the cover plates
How do you customize Marine Band harps?
In addition to the steps described in the AlbertHarp refurbishment process, the following steps are added:
1. Remove the cover nails
2. Drill holes in the front two cover holes and flatten the back two holes
2. Remove the reed plate nails
3. Drill three holes through the reed plates and comb
4. Flatten the rear flange of the cover plates
5. Reattach the reed plates and covers using stainless steel mini bolts and nuts
